IRS: SSD recipients can expect stimulus payments soon

If you look at the streets of Raleigh, you can see that the novel coronavirus has upended nearly everything. Traffic is minimal, businesses are closed and people are mostly shuttered in their homes. The same is true across the U.S. and around the globe.

Not everything is shut down, however. The federal government is still sending out deposits and checks to Social Security Disability beneficiaries. In fact, most SSDI recipients can expect to receive either a direct deposit or check from the recent stimulus.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Treasury Department recently clarified that SSDI recipients who do not typically file federal tax returns will not have to file a return to receive a stimulus payment. Qualifying SSDI recipients will receive $1,200 within a matter of weeks.

According to a news article, the federal agencies said the stimulus payments will be deposited in bank accounts of Social Security recipients who receive disability or retirement benefits.

Spokespersons for the Treasury Department and IRS had originally stated that many SSDI and retirement benefits recipients would need to file federal tax returns to get the stimulus payments, but have since revised that position.

The IRS says it will start making direct deposits to Americans’ bank accounts around April 15. Those deposits will include payments for SSDI recipients.

If you are prevented by injury or illness from working for at least a year, you might qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. Contact a Raleigh attorney experienced in helping applicants appeal denials of benefits in administrative law hearings.
