Trucker cited after 18-wheeler crash kills two on Christmas Eve

If you drive about four hours due north of Raleigh, you will arrive in Virginia’s Rockingham County. A highway tractor-trailer crash on Christmas Eve took the lives of two people there, news reports stated.

State police say that the 18-wheeler slammed into an SUV as the driver was trying to make a left turn on U.S. 11.

Law enforcement officials say the 33-year-old driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene of the truck accident and his 82-year-old passenger (the two share the same last name) was later pronounced dead of her injuries at a nearby hospital.

Both had been wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, a news report stated.

The truck driver, 35, suffered minor injuries in the wreck. However, police said they have charged him with reckless driving.

As many of our readers know, in Virginia reckless driving means that a driver ignored the safety of others while speeding. Law enforcement officials there issue the citation to drivers who do one of two things: exceed the speed limit by 20 mph or more, or who drive faster than 80 mph, no matter what the posted speed limit might be.

While we don’t know which of those two conditions (or possibly both) the trucker met, but we do know that police believe he was driving recklessly and that his disregard for safety resulted in the deaths of two innocent people.

The fact that he was behind the wheel of a large commercial vehicle means that it was even harder for him to maneuver safely around a vehicle making a left turn and it was also harder for him to come to a stop before hitting a turning vehicle.
