Social Security Disability cost-of-living increase announced

There are some annual traditions around this time of year worth noting: North Carolina State’s football season is well underway and basketball season is not far off. The World Series is approaching and the state fair is just around the corner.

Another annual tradition has also just been observed: the announcement by the Social Security Administration (SSA) of the coming cost-of-living increase for next year. The SSA announced that next year’s Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits will rise by 1.6 percent.

While SSDI beneficiaries are undoubtedly pleased by the increase, though some recipients are likely disappointed that the 2020 COLA is smaller than this year’s 2.8 percent and the 2 percent increase of 2018.

The 1.6 percent COLA will begin with benefits paid to Social Security retirees, SSDI recipients and other Social Security beneficiaries in January of next year. The COLA is tied to the increase in the Consumer Price Index calculated by the federal government’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Information about changes to Medicare have not yet been announced, so it is not yet clear how much a cost hike (if any) in that program will affect the SSDI COLA.

The SSA says that the estimated average for a disabled worker, spouse and one or more children next year will be $2,178 per month, up from this year’s $2,144 average monthly benefit. For all disabled workers, next year’s monthly average is estimated to rise from $1,238 to $1,258.

If you are disabled and unable to continue working, you can apply for Social Security Disability or appeal an SSDI benefits denial with the help of a qualified Raleigh attorney.
