Police charge trucker after violent interstate crash

If you drive north of Raleigh for about four hours, you will come to a spot on an interstate highway where two people recently lost their lives. According to Virginia State Police, the two were killed in a violent tractor-trailer crash on I-81 in Roanoke County.

Law enforcement officials have charged the 38-year-old truck driver with reckless driving after the four-vehicle wreck at 6 p.m.

According to officials, the trucker failed to bring his 18-wheeler to a halt before it slammed into two stopped passenger cars and another big rig. The vehicles had stopped for traffic, police said.

One of the drivers was a 51-year-old man who sustained fatal injuries in the crash. He died after being transported to a nearby hospital. The other victim was a 64-year-old man who likewise sustained fatal injuries and died at the hospital.

Both of the truck drivers in the crashes were uninjured.

While we do not yet know why the truck driver failed to notice the stopped vehicles, we do know what has happened in many similarly horrific wrecks. Common causes of these types of crashes include the following:

  • Fatigue: far too often overworked and under-rested truckers cause violent crashes when drowsiness impairs their ability to reason, react and drive safely.
  • Excess speed: in some cases, the 18-wheelers are driven too fast for conditions and cannot stop in time.
  • Distraction: drivers who pay attention to phones or in-dash electronics instead of traffic are at fault in more and more crashes around the nation
  • Impairment: drunk and drugged driving continues to ruin lives
