Extreme weather puts extreme burdens on people with disabilities

Raleigh weather can be a real pain. Hot and humid days fill our summers and we’re not immune from healthy doses of rain and even the occasional city-stopping snowfall. While our unpredictable weather can snarl rush hour traffic or put crimps in the weekend plans of families, weather can have much more ominous meaning to those with disabilities.

According to a recent news report, extreme weather made more frequent by climate change threatens the health of vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, older adults, people with preexisting or chronic medical conditions and people with disabilities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, about one in four Americans has a disability. For many of those more than 60 million, high temperatures can present major challenges, and even present life-threatening risks.

Of course, extreme weather such as hurricanes – events we understand all too well here – threaten everyone, but especially those with disabilities.

“Climate change – and natural disasters in general – threatens the stability of the built environment, that accessible built environment that supports independent living,” said a policy and research specialist at the World Institute on Disability, “Any single disastrous event can throw that out of whack and really endanger people with disabilities.”

One of the lifelines our society offers to those who cannot work is Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. SSDI/SSD benefits can make all the difference, helping people maintain dignity and live independently.

Those who have applied for SSD and been denied should not give up the fight for needed and deserved benefits. Instead, contact a Raleigh attorney experienced in Social Security Disability appeals to learn more about your options.
