SSD benefits claims can get complicated really quickly

The Social Security administration (SSA) advises people who can no longer work due to injury or illness to apply for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits as soon as they become disabled. While the advice is sound, it should be noted that the SSA also wants you to bring with you to the Raleigh office when you apply for SSD benefits a raft of information that most people simply do not have in their possession.

One of the many pieces of information needed can be produced by most folks without a problem: their Social Security number. But things get much more complicated as you go down the list of important documents.

The SSA says that SSD/SSDI applicants should bring with them a wide range of information and documents that includes the following:

  • Your birth certificate
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of your doctors and any caseworkers, hospitals and clinics that have been part of your treatment and care
  • You'll also need the dates on which you received those treatments and care
  • You'll also need the medical records from those visits to doctors, clinics, hospitals, etc.
  • Names and dosage of all your medications
  • Laboratory and test results

In addition, you'll be asked to provide a summary of your employers and the work you did, as well as a copy of your most recent W-2 (wage and tax statement). If you've been self-employed, you can bring your most recent federal tax returns.

In many cases, SSD applicants leave out or overlook needed information and documents, which typically means that their claim will be rejected. An attorney and law firm staff experienced in SSD appeals can help gather the crucial documents and present them to the SSA so that the chances of approval are enhanced.
