Police: Drunk driver caused truck crash, injuries on I-85

The arguments against drunk driving are well-known and obvious. The most important argument is that driving while impaired causes motor vehicle crashes that result in injuries and fatalities.

Not only can a drunk driver dramatically alter or even end the lives of innocent motorists, but the drunk driver puts himself or herself in great danger as well. This point was made clear again recently in Durham when an apparently impaired driver on Interstate 85 slammed his SUV into a tractor-trailer and then a passenger vehicle before the SUV left the road, hit a guardrail, went airborne and landed on the edge of the interstate.

Law enforcement officials said the SUV driver was ejected from his vehicle and has been hospitalized in critical condition.

He will be facing criminal charges, police said. No injuries to the other motorists were reported.

Investigators said that the black SUV was speeding when the vehicle hit an 18-wheeler, then a Cadillac, before going off of the highway.

According to the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people die each year in the U.S. in accidents involving drunk drivers. That’s nearly 30 deaths per day and more than one fatality per hour in crashes that were completely preventable.

Alcohol diminishes a person’s ability to think, concentrate and reason, and it also decreases muscle coordination and reflexes. Though all of these facts are widely known, we still see drunk drivers destroying other people’s lives as well as their own.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by an impaired driver, you can speak with a personal injury attorney about your legal options to obtain justice and compensation.
