Are you in danger of an underride accident with a truck?

It's summer vacation season, which means countless people across the country are taking road trips with their families to go to beaches, visit extended family or enjoy amusement parks. Unfortunately, not everyone who heads out for a drive will stay safe on the roads.

A recent, tragic crash in North Carolina highlights the risk to drivers and passengers who follow too closely behind large commercial trucks.

Driving too closely could mean ending up underneath a truck

Everyone should know it is dangerous to cut off a commercial truck in traffic. If a truck driver doesn't have enough time and space to stop, the semitrailer could drive up and over the rear of your car. However, tailgating trucks is also quite dangerous.

A young woman paid the ultimate price for driving too quickly and closely to a tractor trailer during rush hour. The truck stopped in traffic, and she couldn't stop in time to avoid a collision. Her car slid underneath the back of the truck, and she did not survive.

Inadequate truck guards lead to fatal underride crashes

Driving safely can reduce the risk of underride accidents. Also, semi-trucks are required to have rear and side guards that keep cars from going underneath the trucks during accidents. Unfortunately, many of these special guards are not strong enough to hold back cars, even at slow speeds. Some truck companies also try to save money by installing the cheapest guards they can get away with.

One of the most important things that you can do to keep yourself and your family safe is to leave adequate space between your vehicle and commercial trucks. That includes taking steps to avoid the large blind spots around trucks and following at a safe distance.
