Could it be that an issue that unites Democrats and Republicans has emerged from the chaos of today’s politics? Raleigh’s WNCN reports that Hands Free NC is “drawing support from both sides of the aisle.”
The bill aims to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents caused by distracted drivers by prohibiting drivers from using a phone while behind the wheel.
The official name of Hands Free NC is HB 144. The proposal “would make it illegal to touch or support a cellphone while driving,” CBS 17 reports. However, you would still be able to make hands-free calls using Bluetooth or a speakerphone. You could also attach your phone to your vehicle and use it hands-free.
Drivers could also continue to use their phones’ GPS for navigation and use it to play music. But both of the features would have to be deployed before the car starts to move.
A recent press conference in support of Hands Free NC featured Republican and Democrat lawmakers standing beside families who have lost loved ones to distracted drivers.
A woman whose 19-year-old daughter was killed in a distracted driving crash said if effective measures to curb distracted driving aren’t enacted, you or a loved one could be the next victim. “It’s going to be your kids, your grandkids, your husband, your wife. It’s going to be somebody that you love that you want here and need here and miss.”
If you or a loved one has been harmed by a driver paying attention to their phone rather than the road, you can pursue justice and full compensation for damages with the help of an attorney experienced in personal injury litigation.
