After crash, North Carolina man says kidnappers put him in trunk of car

If you drive due west of Raleigh for about 70 miles, you’ll find yourself in Randolph County. The good news there is that no one was injured in a car crash on a recent weekday. More good news: there was no kidnapping either, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to news reports, police were initially called to a report of a kidnapping. When they arrived, they found instead that a vehicle had crashed through the wall of a church. A man there told the responding deputies that he had been kidnapped at gunpoint and forced into the trunk of a car.

He told the officers that he escaped the vehicle after it crashed through the wall at Mount Gilead United Methodist Church in Trinity.

After deputies investigated his claims, they determined that there was no kidnapping at all, the sheriff’s office said in a statement. They say the man had, in fact, been the driver of the vehicle and that he had driven while “impaired on an unknown substance.” After he slammed the car into the wall, he exited through the rear of the vehicle, they said.

The 32-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital, news reports stated, but left before speaking to police.

He could face additional charges in the matter, law enforcement officials said.

While there is undeniably an element of humor in the odd tale, the story also serves as a reminder of the dangers of impaired driving. The driver is fortunate that he and others were not seriously injured while he was unable to safely navigate his vehicle.
