The leading cause of death in the United States

Approximately 21 million Americans have a fear of flying, the National Institute of Mental Health estimates, with another 1.8 million suffering from agoraphobia or a fear of places from which escape might be difficult. In reality, flying is a very safe way to travel long distances and few people die trapped in an elevator or similarly enclosed spaces.

While those phobias are difficult and real, few people fear that they die by the leading cause of death among Americans ages 44 and under: unintentional injury. More than 60,000 in that age group were killed by unintentional injury in 2016 (the most recent year from which data is available). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the three leading causes of unintentional injury fatalities are motor vehicle crashes, poisoning and falls.

A recent CNN article about unintentional injuries pointed out that taking some basic safety measures to take in your home and on the road to avoid a catastrophic ending.

The news article points out that residential fires are one of biggest threats to safety in the home. Most of the blazes involve a resident who smokes cigarettes, the U.S. Fire Administration says. Also be sure to have at least one fire extinguisher – and regularly check the alarms and extinguisher to ensure they’re functioning.

The CDC points out that more than 30,000 Americans are killed and another two million are injured in motor vehicle wrecks. The agency urges people to never drive after drinking, never exceed the speed limit and always use seatbelts.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also warns that sending or receiving texts while driving is a recipe for a car accident that could result in injuries to you, your passengers and innocent motorists and pedestrians sharing the road.

If you or a loved one has been hurt in a vehicle wreck caused by a careless driver, speak to a Raleigh personal injury attorney about your legal options.
