Summertime driving tips

As we enter the dog days of summer, the temperatures here in Raleigh are typically in the 80s and 90s. Sometimes even higher. A lot of residents head to the ocean in this last, hot stretch of summer or drive off for cooler climes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges motorists hitting the roads for long summer trips to take a few precautions that can help prevent motor vehicle crashes and serious injuries.

The NHTSA reminds drivers to include in their plans for road trips time to pull over, stretch, return your calls or text messages and change drivers (especially if you’re feeling drowsy). Long trips can be tedious, but don’t give in to temptation and look for distractions. As the driver, your loved ones’ safety and lives are in your hands, not to mention your own safety and that of the motorists with whom you’re sharing the road.

The NHTSA urges you to remember as well that summer means there are more bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians on the move, too. They have rights and responsibilities, just as you do, but they don’t have the protection your vehicle affords you, so please keep an eye out for them.

Also leave some extra space between you and a motorcycle ahead of you. Because motorcycles are much lighter, they can stop much faster than any car, SUV or truck.

Just as distracted driving is a growing safety issue, so is distracted walking. That means it is more likely than ever that someone with their head down and eyes on their phone can step out right in front of your moving vehicle. Be cautious and aware at all times around people on foot.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by a careless driver, contact an attorney experienced in obtaining both justice and compensation in personal injury litigation.
