Slow down: Raleigh schools are ready to reopen

Summer is coming to its annual hot close, which means it’s time for Raleigh students to get ready to return to school. It also means drivers should redouble efforts to pay attention to streets, sidewalks, crosswalks and traffic to help eliminate child pedestrian accidents and serious injuries.

The National Safety Council has a clear message for motorists as schools reopen across the nation and millions of kids resume their studies: slow down.

When schools are in session, congestion near them increases dramatically with parents dropping kids off and picking kids up, school buses loading and unloading, kids on bicycles and children on foot. Don’t try to hurry through school zones. Speed limits are lower in school zones to maximize your reaction time and also give children a better chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.

The National Safety Council says its research shows that most kids who lose their lives in bus-related accidents are walking and from 4 to 7 years old. They are most often either struck by the bus or by a driver illegally passing a stopped bus.

When you’re driving on streets near schools, remember too that kids are bundles of energy. They can dart out into traffic without warning. It’s up to you to proceed cautiously, which means reduced speeds and keeping a watch on kids as they walk or bicycle on or near the street.

If you or a loved one is injured by a careless, distracted or otherwise negligent driver, contact a law firm experienced in obtaining maximum compensation in personal injury litigation.
