North Carolina: Slightly worse than average in deadly roads ranks

While most of us live in Raleigh because we love it, our home can be a long drive from some of America’s favorite destinations. While it’s just about two hours east to the coast, it’s a 12-hour drive to New York City, a 16-hour drive to New Orleans and a whopping 38-hour jaunt to get to the Grand Canyon. Of course, you can fly to those destinations and many, many others, cutting your driving time down to a commute to Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Because America is such a big, beautiful place, Americans are used to motoring to get to where we want to be. We sometimes forget how dangerous driving can be and that car accidents, injuries and fatalities can happen in the blink of an eye. According to a recent analysis, North Carolina ranks 19th in the nation for deadliest roads.

Financial news site 24/7 Wall St. recently analyzed 2016 motor vehicle crash data from all states to see which is the most dangerous place to drive. North Carolina placed between West Virginia and Arizona in the rankings.

We have 14.3 deaths per 100,000 residents, according to the data, but our 1,450 deaths in 2016 ranked fifth in the country. On the positive side, seat belt use here is 92 percent.

The safest state in the nation? If you guessed Rhode Island, give yourself a gold star. It has 4.8 deaths per 100,000 residents, though its seat belt usage is slightly worse than ours (88 percent).

Mississippi is at the bottom of the road safety pile. It has 23.1 roadway deaths per 100,000 residents. According to the data, seat belt usage there is at 78 percent.

If you have lost a loved one in a car crash caused by a negligent driver, speak with an attorney experienced in obtaining justice for grieving family members in wrongful death litigation.
