Careful: Road construction work zones ahead

It is that time of the year again: temperatures are up, schoolkids are out (and so is the sun), and people are coming and going from Raleigh for summertime adventures. It is also normal at this time of the year to see road construction both in the city and on highways that lead to us.

The city’s website lists a number of ongoing road projects. Those work zones not only slow traffic but also present additional hazards for drivers. Far too often, people do not pay proper attention while driving through work zones and the result can be motor vehicle collisions and sometimes crashes involving construction workers.

The U.S. Transportation Department’s Federal Highway Administration says that there is a work zone crash every five minutes. The agency says that most road construction accidents result in damage only (73 percent), though 26.4 percent of the wrecks in work zones involve at least one injured person. Slightly less than one percent involve at least one fatality.

The data collected also shows that 18-wheelers are the most dangerous vehicles in work zones. Between 2000 and 2008, approximately 25 percent of work zone vehicle fatalities involved a large truck. About 12 percent of all highway fatalities involve large trucks, the Federal Highway Administration said.

Nearly half of all road construction worker deaths (48 percent) involved runovers or backovers (typically by dump trucks). Another 14 percent were in collisions between vehicles and equipment and 14 percent were struck by or caught in between equipment and objects.

If you or a loved one has been harmed in a motor vehicle accident, contact a lawyer experienced in personal injury litigation.
