Tire maintenance tips for improved safety

Drivers in North Carolina probably know how important it is to have good tires on their vehicles. However, they may not know all the steps that they should take to maintain these components. Proper tire maintenance can help drivers avoid deadly collisions, especially when road conditions are wet.

First of all, tires should be inflated to the level recommended for the particular vehicle. This information is usually found in the manual and sometimes in the car door. Low pressure can make tires lose their grip on wet roads, so regular checkups will be necessary. Checking the pressure once a month in the early morning is ideal.

To retain traction on wet roads, drivers should make sure their tires have good tread. There's a simple test to determine if drivers have sufficient tread. Drivers can stick a quarter upside down into a tire groove, and if Washington's head is uncovered, they should consider getting new tires.

New tires should always go in the back whether a car is front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive. Good rear tires are what prevent a car from spinning out of control on slippery surfaces. Lastly, drivers should rotate their tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles to ensure that they get worn evenly.

A police officer at the scene of an auto accident could easily detect bad tires and set this information down in the report. This may be considered proof of the driver's fault and even provide the grounds for a successful accident claim. Before filing an accident claim, a victim may want to retain legal counsel. An attorney can negotiate for a settlement on the client's behalf, litigating if the insurance company refuses to pay out.
