Responding to aggressive drivers

Drivers in North Carolina probably know about road rage, either at first or second hand. They should know, then, how important it is not to provoke other drivers who are being aggressive or bullying. The following are just a few tips on how to handle common situations.

When drivers see someone riding close behind them on a multi-lane highway, that person most likely wants to pass. Drivers are advised not to slow down or speed up, as this may block a passing lane and anger the other even more. Instead, signal for a turn and do so when it's safe. It would not be good for the other to have to pass on the right.

Another common situation that inspires road rage is when drivers have a parking spot taken from them. Letting go of little grudges like this, though easy to say, is the only way to defuse road rage. Drivers should perhaps give the other the benefit of the doubt and assume that he or she did not see them.

The most important thing is to stay calm and think reasonable thoughts. Drivers should tell themselves that anger will not help them get to their destination any sooner. Listening to soothing music is also recommended. Drivers should never make eye contact with the offending driver, flash the headlights, or make inflammatory gestures.

Aggressive driving often leads to car accidents, especially rear-end collisions. Victims of such collisions may benefit from speaking with a lawyer because they may have the grounds for a personal injury claim. A successful claim may cover things like vehicle damage, medical expenses, and lost wages; it could also bring in punitive damages as a way to punish the other driver for his or her aggressive behavior. The lawyer may hire investigators to build up proof and then handle all negotiations.
