How whiplash can affect your ability to work

If you got into an accident and are suffering from whiplash, you might be wondering how you will be able to go back to work. There is a popular assumption that whiplash is only minor neck pain, but it can be much more severe. Depending on the seriousness of your collision, you may be dealing with complications for months or years.

Whiplash symptoms may often not show up for several days or weeks after your initial accident, making you question whether you should be working. Here are some important things you should know about returning to work after sustaining a whiplash injury.

What you should do immediately after your injury

After a car accident, you might receive medical care on-site from paramedics or in the emergency room. However, even if you received initial treatment, you may want to see your doctor or go to an urgent care center if your symptoms show up or get worse days after.

Be prepared to describe the severity of your neck pain, whether movement makes your pain worse and any other symptoms you have. The physician will perform tests to diagnose your injury and recommend treatments or prescribe medications. Your doctor will also advise you on how much rest to take.

How it might impact your ability to work

First, the injury itself may prevent you from doing your job for a certain period of time. Severe neck pain, pounding headaches, restricted movement, difficulty concentrating and dizziness are all potential symptoms of whiplash that may affect your ability to carry out professional duties. Strong prescription painkillers and advised rest may also restrict you from returning to work right away.

In any of these cases, you have options. If you do miss work from your injury, you might be able to recover lost wages and medical costs from the insurance company of the at-fault driver.
