Car accident deaths caused by distracted driving on the rise

Advances in technology have allowed for office-based businessmen to hit the road, parents to track the whereabouts of children and a wider choice in entertainment. However, advances have also resulted in an epidemic of distracted driving in North Carolina and across the country. According to some analysts, defensive driving basics are all undercut by technology that takes attention away from the road.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data from 2015 shows that of the human errors that cause fatal traffic accidents, distracted driving saw the biggest increase. Human errors also include drunk driving, violation of traffic laws and seat belt violation. In overall, deaths resulting from car accidents increased from 2014 to 2015. Experts predict that 2016 numbers will exceed those near the start of the last decline in 2008.

Defensive driving is an active method to scan for, predict and identify possible causes of car accidents. Once identified, a decision should be made on whether and how to act. Analysts point out that this is a mentally demanding task under the best of circumstances. The task of defensive driving becomes more demanding with the presence of both distracted motorists and pedestrians on the road.

It only takes a moment for a pedestrian checking an incoming message or driver glancing at a playlist to cause a fatal accident. Studies and statistics appear to show that these moments of distraction are increasing with the temptation of technology and over-confidence of drivers. North Carolina victims of distracted driving can turn to experienced legal counsel for assistance. An attorney many be able to help a victim receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
