Vehicle recalls set record in 2015

While many car accidents in North Carolina are the result of driver error or unsafe road conditions, some accidents and injuries may be caused by defective vehicles. Even when drivers exercise due caution they still can find themselves in accidents because something went wrong in the manufacturing process. Some defects are serious enough that people have died or been severely injured as a result.

One way auto manufacturers try to rectify this is by recalling vehicles to repair or replace defective auto parts that could cause accidents. Vehicle recalls set a record last year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which said that 51.5 million vehicles were involved in almost 900 recalls. Nearly half were recalled due to an ongoing investigation into airbags that didn't deploy properly.

In the past, automakers have not reported problems promptly to the agency, which can result in hefty fines for each safety violation. Recalls are increasing because automakers hope to avoid the fines. Experts think the number of recalled vehicles could be higher in 2016 because of this. The federal agency says automakers generally have 75 percent of recalled vehicles repaired within 18 months.

North Carolina residents who have been injured in an accident caused by a defective part or an automotive design defect often are forced to incur high medical expenses and undergo lengthy periods of rehabilitation during which they are unable to earn a living. Those who have been the victims of these types of accidents may want to have the assistance of a products liability attorney in seeking appropriate compensation from the manufacturer.
