NTSB urges automakers to make collision avoidance tech standard

Citing the potential to reduce car accidents and prevent fatalities, the National Transportation Safety Board has repeatedly urged automakers to include collision avoidance systems as standard features in new passenger and commercial vehicles. If manufacturers adopted the technology, drivers in North Carolina and across the country could potentially have access to safer vehicles.

In a recent 60-page report, the NTSB estimated that collision avoidance systems could reduce the severity of over 80 percent of rear-end collisions. These systems include warning signals to alert drivers to an imminent crash or drifting out of a lane. They can also initiate automatic braking.

According to the NTSB report, rear-end crashes kill approximately 1,700 people every year and injure more 500,000 people. To date, only four models of new passenger vehicles include collision avoidance technology. The chairman of the NTSB said that very little progress had been made with voluntary acceptance of these proposed safety enhancements among automakers.

Motor vehicle accidents can occur for a variety of reasons, but unsafe behavior like texting while driving, drinking and driving or speeding is often the cause, as such activities can cause a driver to fail to pay attention to other vehicles that are on the road.. A person hurt in a car accident might be able to recover damages for medical bills and lost income through a personal injury lawsuit filed against the negligent driver. An attorney can assist such an injured victim by using evidence such as eyewitness testimony as well as the contents of an accident investigation report prepared by authorities to demonstrate that negligence was the cause of the client's damages.
