Intoxicated driver involved in North Carolina crash

Drinking and driving is a dangerous combination, especially when accidents result in serious or fatal injuries to other drivers. Such was the case on Nov. 4, 2012, when a 54-year-old pickup truck driver was operating her vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration of .10 percent, .02 percent above the legal limit in North Carolina. When the intoxicated driver approached a red stoplight at a Wilmington intersection, she proceeded to go through and strike another vehicle.

The driver of a Toyota Camry travelling through the intersection that was hit by the pickup truck driver suffered severe injuries as a result of the collision. The driver's skull was fractured, resulting in the need for emergency brain surgery following the accident. A one-month hospital stay was necessary due to the extent of the injuries, treatment and care involved.

The driver of the pickup truck was charged with a felony of serious injury by vehicle. Despite the absence of the accused at her two-day trial, the judge allowed the case to be heard. Authorities were able to arrest her, at which point she pleaded guilty to the charges against her. The judge sentenced her to serve time in prison for 22 to 36 months.

An individual who has been involved in an automobile accident caused by the actions of another driver can greatly benefit from speaking to an attorney. Reviewing legal rights and options for recovering costs for medical care, therapy and any other losses related to the accident can help the affected driver focus on their health and recuperation while their legal counsel can focus on getting their client the compensation needed for their injuries.
