Speeding believed to be a factor in fatal head-on collision

Highway officials reported that a 62-year-old North Carolina resident died in a two-vehicle collision. The Oct. 23 accident transpired around 3:30 p.m. just outside of Lumberton. Law enforcement officials cited speeding and reckless driving as reasons behind the fatal accident.

According to authorities, the crash took place on North Carolina Highway 72, where a 25-year-old man driving east in a 1992 Lincoln collided head-on with a westbound 2009 Mercury. Immediately prior to the collision, the 25-year-old man's car swerved in an uncontrollable manner into the westbound lane. The driver of the Mercury, the 62-year-old woman, died as a result of the crash, officials said.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the 25-year-old Lincoln driver was traveling eastbound at a rate of 75 miles per hour before losing control of the car, over-compensating and striking the oncoming Mercury. Authorities estimated that the speed of the Mercury was roughly 55 mph, which was the posted speed limit for that particular highway. Following the accident, the Mercury reportedly careened off the roadway and into a ditch.

According to authorities, the 25-year-old Lincoln driver may face charges in connection with this deadly event. Officials indicated that the Lincoln driver's recklessness and speeding contributed to the wreck.

Families of people who perish in a car accident caused by a reckless and careless driver may be eligible to pursue compensation for their losses through a wrongful death suit. If it can be proven that another party's careless and reckless actions did in fact contribute to the accident, an attorney representing the bereaved family may convince a civil court to hold the at-fault party responsible and award the family restitution for their losses, pecuniary and noneconomic.
