Avoiding truck accidents

Many North Carolina motorists do not enjoy driving next to or near large 18-wheel trucks. This is understandable, as there are a few reasons why this can be risky.

One main reason is the weight difference between trucks and passenger vehicles. In some cases, 18-wheelers can weigh around 40 tons while a passenger vehicles weighs around 2 tons or so. If the truck loses control or cannot stop in time, the smaller passenger vehicle and the occupants inside will sustain more damage if a truck collision occurs. The weight of the truck also means that these vehicles need more distance to come to a full stop. This puts drivers who like to weave in and out of traffic at risk for becoming involved in a crash.

Large trucks have a variety of blind spots around the cab and trailer. When passenger vehicles travel in these blind spots, the truck drivers are unable to see them, and accidents could result. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration noted that about 33 percent of all accidents involving 18-wheelers and passenger vehicles are caused by the trucks' blind spots. Drivers of passenger vehicles should avoid these blind spots as much as possible.

When a big rig accident involving a passenger vehicle occurs, it is likely that the occupants of the passenger vehicle will suffer serious if not life-impacting injuries. In some cases, the injuries are so severe that victims might never be able to return to gainful employment. If it can be determined that the collision was due to truck driver negligence, an attorney could be of assistance in seeking compensation for the losses that have been, and are expected to be, incurred.
