Depending on the type and severity of your disability, you might qualify for Social Security benefits. Here are the most common conditions and injuries that result in disability.

1. Musculoskeletal problems

Arthritis is likely the biggest cause of disability cases. People who have arthritis might experience pain and stiffness in joints that affect their jobs. Other issues with muscles and joints cause disability, including:

  • Back pain

  • Bones that never heal
  • Fractures
  • Soft tissue damage

All of these musculoskeletal issues commonly cause long-term disability.

2. Spinal cord injuries

If your spinal cord sustains damage, it usually results in severe physical trauma. When there is damage to any part of the spinal cord, including spinal canal nerves, it can permanently impact your daily life in significant ways. Those with spinal cord injuries may have difficulty walking, loss of bladder control, paralysis, loss of movement and difficulty breathing.

3. Accidents

Various type of accidents can result in disabling injuries. Accidents as a whole account for about 10 percent of disability cases. Slipping, tripping and falling at a workplace can result in severe injuries. Getting into a may cause devastating injuries. Harmful products can also cause injuries that result in disability.
