Car accidents and whiplash injuries

Many people who have been involved in car accidents in North Carolina have suffered whiplash injuries. Whiplash is a type of soft tissue injury that is commonly caused by the force of a vehicle collision. When two vehicles collide, the force of the impact can cause the passengers to be jolted forward and backward. This sudden motion can cause the sensitive muscles and ligaments in the neck to overextend or tear, resulting in whiplash.

Vehicle accidents that occur at low speed can generate enough force to cause whiplash. In some cases, a person who has been involved in a car crash may not even realize that they have suffered a whiplash injury until days later. When whiplash symptoms eventually manifest, they can include severe pain, stiffness and soreness in the neck, shoulders and back.

Some people who suffer whiplash injuries report feeling dizzy or nauseous. Symptoms can also include ringing in the ears, memory problems or a feeling of vertigo. In many cases, these symptoms will fade over a period of a few weeks or months. In some rare instances, the symptoms may last up to a year or more.

Common whiplash treatments include over-the-counter pain relievers, massage and light stretching. A chiropractor can usually diagnose a case of whiplash by interviewing a patient and performing a physical examination. In more serious cases, an MRI scan may be performed to identify which muscles and ligaments have been affected by the injury.

When a negligent driver causes a car accident, he or she may be held liable for the victim's car repairs and medical bills. An attorney may be able to use accident reports to show that a negligent driver should be held responsible for insurance payments to the attorney's client.
